Fishing Report Week Of June 6th

Despite the last few days of fast moving storms, windy conditions and slow tidal movement the bite has not been to bad. Getting out of the wind and finding clean moving water will be the key to success. Not everyone can fish all day every day so maximize your time on the water. Look for areas that are likely to hold the species you are targeting.

Keep in mind how a particular species feeds and present your bait of choice in an appropriate manner. If the tailing bronze bombers are on the menu, look for areas that have structure. Mangrove prop roots, oyster bars, docks and piers are all good areas to focus in on. Reds are inferior feeders, meaning there lower jaw is recessed. The best way to present your baits are on the bottom or in there face.

On the opposite side of the feeding spectrum you have snook. They are superior feeders, having a lower jaw that protrudes past the upper jaw. When a snook hits your bait, there jaw opens wide and fast sucking it in whole. This creates that popping sound you may here on a calm day. Snook can be found on the beaches in good numbers and along mangrove lined channels.
In the middle of the feeding spectrum we have our snuggle toothed friend the trout. They are terminal feeders meaning neutral. They hit baits on top, on the bottom, right in there face and everywhere in-between. Salt and pepper bottomed grass flats are prime hunting grounds for our speckled friend. To keep baits from burring in the grass consider using a cork to present your bait just above the grass tips. Focus on the potholes where trout sit to ambush there prey.

White bait is the universal bait of choice for just about everything. Early mornings are your best bet to load up. The standard 2 - 4 foot of water on a grass flat is where you can start looking. If you don’t have any luck move out to a little deeper water. Consider using some chum to bring them to the boat. Don’t over do it! a little goes a long way. If you have a pinfish trap put a few frozen sardines in the trap and drop it in a pot hole on a grass flat. With any luck you will have a few grunts or pig fish in the mix after a half hour or so. They are like candy to a snook and hard to pass up when presented
correctly to a hungry line slider causing the beach. If you happen to catch a ladyfish while searching for trout on the flat KEEP IT! Cut ladyfish can land you some big red fish. They are bloody oily fish and there sent goes a long way particularly when the small pinfish start pecking at it. Along the same line as cut bait consider cutting the tail off of you white bait to add a little scent to the water. Good luck stay safe and have fun.
